This vision became a reality in 2023, driven by the critical finding that Caswell County was designated a childcare desert by the North Carolina Division of Child Development. With the support of a start-up grant, we registered A Step Forward with the state in October 2023 and focused on constructing a high-quality program for the community.
In April 2025, we met the owner of a local childcare facility interested in selling. The owner was a cherished community staple for over 20 years and was planning on closing for personal reasons. Working together, our families ensured that the residents of Yanceyville would not lose access to quality childcare.
It is our commitment to the residents of Yanceyville, NC, and all of Caswell County to continue to provide a reliable place where their children can learn and play while their parents earn a living and provide for their families.
A Step Forward Early Learning Academy is proudly owned and operated by Timothy and Lakisha Word, residents of Reidsville, North Carolina and parents of two sons. Our vision is to elevate the quality of childcare in rural communities and confidently prepare every child for the world that lies ahead.
Mrs. Word is a seasoned childcare professional with over 30 years of experience, including 16 years in director roles. Her expertise is deepened by a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in Early Childhood Education and five years dedicated to strengthening non-profit systems serving children from birth to age five.
Mr. Word, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, brings a strong foundation of business and leadership experience. As the owner of a music production company and a mentor with the Recording Academy, he has over 25 years of experience delivering high-quality, ethical work. His passion for teaching at Lune Sparks Creative Center and his commitment to excellence ensure A Step Forward operates with integrity and a focus on positive outcomes.
To ensure a seamless transition and uphold our commitment to educational excellence, Mrs. Word will step into the role of Acting Director. She will maintain this leadership role to ensure the highest standards of care and operation while we search for and onboard a permanent Director.
